Country music is a music category of American popular music which emanated in the 1920s from Southern United States. It as origins from the southeastern style of Western music and American folk music, and blues have been a significant influence to it. Oftentimes comprised of dance tunes and ballads with generally simple harmonies and forms played mainly with string instruments such as acoustic and electric guitars, fiddles, harmonicas, and banjos.
The term “country music” attained prevalence throughout the 1940s over the previously used term (hillbilly music). Western music which developed along with hillbilly music from related roots in the middle of the 20th century. Today, the term “country music” describes many music styles and sub-classifications. In 2009, country music became the most prevalent music listened to in the rush hour radio genre, and the second leading genre in the morning commute across the United States.
It has grown through several generations since the 1920s. At present, one of the most commercially acknowledged artists since the late 2000s up until the early 2010s is singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. Swift, part of the sixth generation of country music artists, made her debut in 2006 at age 16 with her debut single "Tim McGraw". She has been sought-after and prolific in creating country and pop singles since then.
